The Urban List April 2017

Emma John, journalist British Telegraph and Guardian, March 2017
“Beechworth especially is a fantastic town and somewhere I would certainly shout about from the rooftops. The museum is really incredible – Patrick Watt, the curator, is clearly a huge talent and someone who is doing incredible things in the community. I was just so surprised to find a place of such depth and significance in such a tiny remote town. Ditto the Provenance restaurant – it’s clearly a destination venue and somewhere I can see foodies travelling out of the city especially to visit. The rail trail (cycling) is an incredible resource, again, something that I can see a lot of UK folk enjoying as a self-guided experience, and the whole region felt very exciting right now – so many people moving out of the city to set up little businesses, mostly food related. The Tour de Pedal guided cycling tour was excellent, the Ned Kelly walking tour in Beechworth was charming, the lunch at Milawa Cheese Factory was very good – the Pizzini cooking class is truly outstanding. The only thing people need to know is how early country businesses shut – it’s something that a lot of visitors might be caught out by, eg the Brewery stops serving their famous pizzas at 8.30pm.

Accommodation wise: Casa Luna was the really standout accommodation for me – I wish we’d had longer to spend there, just because it feels such a romantic and relaxing place.”
