The upper and lower King Valley are specialist areas for Italian varieties – sangiovese, barbera, pinot grigio, arneis, and the exciting new prosecco, to name a few. Some well known cellar doors are Brown Brothers in Milawa (www.brown-brothers.com.au) and Dal Zotto (www.dalzotto.com.au) and Pizzini (www.pizzini.com.au) in Whitfield. Visitors will discover intimate family-run cellar door experiences. You will meet the wine maker, or at least his or her son or daughter. They will proudly show you their products, and happily refer you to a neighbour who specialises in a grape which may be a favourite of yours.
Brown Brothers were instrumental in the development of the Italian varieties, as they encouraged the local Italian tobacco growers to plant the grapes they had known in their own native regions, at the time of the collapse of the tobacco industry in Victoria. These farmers are now wine makers with their own cellar doors.
